WHY TAKE ACTION NOW?

There is no longer any debate: Human activities are dramatically changing the Earth's climate, primarily by the relentless burning of fossil fuels that have sequestered carbon from countless millennia of decaying plant life under the planet's surface--until now. As coal, oil, and natural gas are burned, they annually release billions of tons of ancient carbon into the atmosphere, as carbon dioxide [CO2], which then acts as a global greenhouse roof, holding solar radiation around the Earth, and, consequently, rapidly changing our climate.

In the last 100 years, this greenhouse effect has raised the Earth's average temperature over 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit, to a level never before experienced by humans. Arctic sea ice, permafrost, and glaciers are melting at unprecedented rates, and these rates are increasing. Unchecked, the global temperature will continue to rise to catastrophic levels, becoming irreversible in the near future -- unless humans act very quickly to change humanity's present fossil-fuel-dependent course.

Already, around the world, we are seeing the profound impacts of a changed climate as disastrous floods, droughts, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity; all of which scientists have warned will be the results of a warmer Earth. Billions of dollars have all ready been spent recovering from these disasters, but the eventual toll will be in the trillions. The death toll of both human and animal life will be unimaginable.

This current generation of seniors has an unprecedented opportunity and responsibility to reverse this climate disaster. Seniors in America control over 50% of all assets in the country; they hold positions of influence in their communities; they have a lifetime of wisdom to bring to bear on this problem. And they can see the future through their children's and grandchildren's eyes--a future that they can change for the better through their own decisive action.

The solutions to stopping the Earth's temperature rise are myriad and complex, but they come down to one simple basic concept: HUMANITY MUST STOP USING FOSSIL FUELS. PERIOD. And it must do so as quickly as humanly possible.

To accomplish this formidable task, humanity must switch rapidly to an electricity-based economy and it must generate that electricity entirely from renewable sources and use batteries to handle the intermittency of renewables. Paradoxically, we must also become much more electric energy-efficient --- also as rapidly as possible. This is a daunting task, made all the more difficult by the need to make this transition complete in the next few decades. And we face this formidable task arrayed against the largest and most powerful industry on earth -- the global fossil fuel industry.

The various actions proposed on this website provide concrete steps that anyone, but particularly senior citizens, can take to make this civilizational transition possible. You can join the millions of seniors who are already taking action to create a better future for all life on our small planet. And you can use your own financial stability to help your children and grandchildren also take the steps necessary to confront this emergency. Please take action today. Humanity has never before faced such a monumental problem.

We will need all of us to confront this climate emergency and end the use of fossil fuels.
